GOT HARD WATER?

Hard water is a condition that varies from county to county depending on the water district. The more calcium or magnesium bicarbonate dissolved in the water the "harder" the water is said to be.

Hard water causes scale to build up on inside your pipes, inside your water heater and on your dishware and appliances. Hard water also has a negative reaction with soap and hinders soap's ability to lather.

One solution to eliminating or reducing hard water is the installation of a water softener. Most people with water softeners are unaware of exactly how their water softener works. Basically, without getting into a long technical explanation, the calcium and magnesium bicarbonate ions are replaced with sodium or potassium chloride ions. Since sodium or potassium chloride ions do not attach themselves to your piping/dishware or have a negative reaction to soap, you are lead to believe that your "softened" water is a good thing. ABOUT WATER SOFTENING

THE ADVANTAGES:

  • The nuisance factor of hard water is reduced
  • Some positive charged ions like barium, radium and iron may be reduced depending on the manufacturer's specifications.

THE DISADVANTAGES:

  • The process of regenerating the ion exchange bed dumps salt water into the environment.
  • The elevated sodium concentration of most softened water can affect the taste and may not be good for people on low sodium diets, although sodium concentrations are typically quite low relative to sodium levels in most food. Even if your softener is only hooked up to your hot water you can still ingest some when you brush your teeth, cooking or in the shower.
  • Positive ion exchange does not reduce the level of negative charged ions (like nitrates), or biological contaminates (bacteria, viruses, cysts, etc.); nor does the process reduce the levels of most organic compounds.
  • Typically, approximately 50 gallons of rinse water per cubic foot of resin is required to totally remove hardness and excess salt from the resin after each regeneration.
